Frequently asked questions

We're transferring our BT Ireland email service to Blacknight, so we've answered a few questions you might have.

Why are you transferring my email service?
When we started our email service back in the days of dial-up internet, we offered services to the consumer and SME markets as well as the larger business market. As we don’t serve the consumer and SME markets in Ireland anymore, we decided to transfer the email service to make sure that our loyal customers would still have access to their email addresses.

Blacknight is an experienced and well respected Ireland-based service provider who’s very successful in addressing the email, domain name and related services market in this country. If you decide to transfer your email address to Blacknight, you’ll be in excellent hands.

About your email service:

I don’t remember setting up this email service. How did I get it?
This was part of an internet dial-up package that you had years ago. You’ll have got it with one of our old packages.

Sample email addresses are: john.doe@iol.ie; john.doe@iolfree.ie; john.doe@esatclear.ie; john.doe@oceanfree.net )

The domains were:

  • IOL Gold
  • IOL Free
  • Oceanfree
  • Esat Clear Surf Free
  • Esat Clear Surf NoLimits

How much did I pay for the email service?
Email was always included in the cost for the internet package. It wasn’t charged for separately.

Why is BT selling its email service?
We no longer service the consumer and SME markets, but we wanted to make sure that you could still use your email address, we have decided to sell the service to Blacknight.

How much is Blacknight paying for the email service?
We can’t publish the commercial value of the service for competition reasons.

At the end of the 30 days (date from initial notification from BT) you won’t receive any new emails. 40 days after our first email notification you can still access the mails that are in your inbox. Once that time is up, we’ll close the email service and you’ll no longer have access to your account. We’ll then delete all the data related to the email service.

Who can I contact if I have an issue with the transfer?
If you have questions please email our support team who’ll be able to help: support@btireland.ie.

Will my existing email be available after I move to Blacknight?
If you are a standard user and you access your email regularly we recommend that you keep on top of your emails during the 30 day period to ensure you still have access to them after the move. We will do our best to move unread mails to your new email service but we can’t guarantee this as some might get lost during the move.
